Ruthin, N. Wales. Tai Chi Chuan & Oriental Arts, the journal of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain (TCUGB), leads with Somerset based Damo Mitchell on the front cover of its Summer 2010 edition. Damo Michell is a contributor to Taiji Online, including his recent featured article on our site: Tai Chi: The Taoist Approach to Living.
In his new magazine article, “The Basics of Xingyiquan”, Damo discusses Xingyiquan, an internal martial art which Damo says, like Taiji or Bagua, relies on “working primarily with the mind to develop and issue power, although the manner in which [the styles] do this is quite different”.
According to Damo, whereas Taijiquan practitioners seek to develop a strong core which becomes rooted, Xingyi practitioners are more mobile and direct in their approach to combat. There are various approaches to Xingyiquan, and to get an idea of the technique you can watch Damo working through the form and applications in his video.
You can find out more about Damo at Lotus Nei Gong.
Tai Chi Chuan and Oriental Arts is the official publication of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain. The magazine’s first edition was printed in 1994, and today is published quarterly. Another recent contributor to Tai Chi Chuan and Oriental Arts, Martin Boedicker, has kindly allowed us to reproduce a written article previously, “About the Written Tradition of Taijiquan“, at Taiji Online.
